Interview with Mark Goodier, Radio 1 (2 parts)

Two weeks before the ZOO TV tour began, U2 drop by Radio 1 to speak with Mark Goodier. This interview is not the typical “ironic” Zoo era interview, as the band seem to be in a fairly serious mood at many points. Apparently, the band had been shooting videos all day, and Bono is tired and a bit off his game. Bits of this interview ended up on Achtung Baby: The Videos, the Cameos, and a whole lot of Interference, including Edge discussing “owl droppings” and a quip by Bono about Edge’s “smelly feet”. Topics include Hansa Studios, Bono discusses the Achtung Baby bootleg tapes, a rant by Bono about regarding tour sponsorship, Adam says something about not wearing clothes, and the band discuss swimming pools. Special thanks to Sue Fell for providing this interview. First broadcast February 13th, 1992.

Bono on 99x Atlanta, Mother’s Day

Bono does a “phone in” to Atlanta’s 99x FM radio for their Mother’s Day show in 1998. The interview is with Adora Mills, mother of Mike Mills from REM. Of note is Bono’s daughter Eve saying “Happy Mother’s Day” while home with a sore throat . Also, there is an extended discussion with Adora regarding The Mother’s Of The Disappeared coming on stage during some of the Chile and Argentina PopMart tour stops. Special thanks to Sue Fell for providing this updated interview. First broadcast on May 8th, 1998.

JJJ Interview Glasgow (2 parts)

Australian radio station Triple J catches up with Edge, Adam, and Paul McGuinness in Glasgow Scotland. Interviews were taped just before the Zoo TV Glasgow show. Particularly interesting is hearing Paul McGuinness discuss the “economics” of the tour, specifically how the Zoo TV lost money. Paul also suggests, somewhat bluntly, that U2 would probably not tour Australia due to the poor Australian economy (this obviously turned out not to be true). Also, Edge goes into an extended discussion of the Sellafield Nuclear Power Plant. Additionally, there is a rare interview with original Zoo TV belly dancer Christina Petro (who years later became XTina X, the lead singer for the band Grim Faeries). The source tape has some issues during both parts. Special thanks to Sue Fell for providing this interview. Recorded June 18th, 1992.

Jo Whiley BBC Radio 1 in Dublin (2 parts)

Yet another interview with Jo Whiley, only this time, there are studio problems. The entire band are in their Dublin studio as the Pop album is being released. The radio show goes out to a reported audience of 145 million, representing 5 continents and 50 countries. Technical problems crop up and the interview is interrupted at various points. The mixing desk “blows up”, there is “spillage” by someone working for the BBC and Bono has an allergic reaction to red wine and is highly medicated. Additionally, this interview includes two segments created by the BBC. In one, Irish fans are asked their opinion of the band (not all are good). In another, a “U2 in two minutes” segment covers the history of the band. This version of the interview was recorded directly from BBC Radio 1, and as a result, includes extra interview segments. Special thanks to Sue Fell for providing this interview. First broadcast March 1st, 1997.

Bono phones in to The Gay Byrne Show on RTE to discuss the 1989 Oscar winning film My Left Foot. Special thanks to Sue Fell for providing this interview. First broadcast March 27th 1990.

Bono, WAPP Hot 103 New York

A classic Bono interview from the Unforgettable Fire era. Bono visits WAPP Hot 103 FM and talks with DJ Rufus. This is one of Bono’s more intense interviews where he is focused on the topic of religion. Special thanks to Sue Fell for providing this interview. This interview dates to the Unforgettable Fire Tour, most likely early April 1985 during the 4th leg of the tour.

The Call, Greenbelt Festival 90

A very short interview with members of The Call at Greenbelt Festival 1990. The Greenbelt Festival is a festival of Christian rock bands held since 1974 in the UK. During the interview, The Call band members discuss working with Bono and T-Bone Burnett to create a demo for “Slow Dancing”, a song U2 would later record twice in the studio (once alone, and once with Willie Nelson). They also discuss Bono doing backing vocals for The Call song What’s Happened To You. Special thanks to Sue Fell for providing this interview. Recorded August 24th to August 27th, 1990.

Edge on RTE2 FM

In January 1990, just after Bono’s famous “dream it all up again” speech at Dublin’s Point Depot, Edge sits down with Russian Journalist Artemy Troitsky. This interview was then rebroadcast on RTE2 FM with their DJ providing the questions and commentary for Edge’s answers. Special thanks to Sue Fell for providing this interview. Originally broadcast January 12th, 1990.
